National Artist Dolphy
Let us all join the call for Comedy King Dolphy to be declared a National Artist.
Why? Because Dolphy is more than a king in the Philippine entertainment scene, he is an institution. Dolphy has been entertaining the Filipino people for years older than majority of us now, and he has managed to stay on top (to think he’s already 80).
Dolphy mirrors every struggling Filipino who dreams of becoming a “somebody”. Himself having started as a struggling stage performer during the Japanese era, he rose to become a character actor (thanks to the late Fernando Poe, Sr.) and then went on to be no less than the Comedy King. From dreams to reality.
He has done so many films, including Dobol trobol (Wala ‘yan sa pare ko) with Vic Sotto (upcoming), Home Along Da River (2003), Markova: Comfort Gay (2000), Daddy O! Baby O! (2000), Mario Tataynic (1998), Aringkingking (1997), Da Best in da West 2 (1997), Home Along da Riles The Movie 2 (1997), Father & Son (1995), Home Sic Home (1995), Wanted: Perfect Father (1994), Hataw tatay hataw (1994), Abrakadabra (1994), Home Along da Riles The Movie (1993), Espadang Patpat (1990), Og Must Be Crazy (1990), and John and Marsha ‘90 (1990). And these are just the most recent, huh…
Dolphy was most famous in his film Jack and Jill (1954) which paved the way for him to be the comedy icon that he is today. He also appeared in films like Maalaala mo kaya (1954), Menor de edad (1954), Sabungera (1954), Sa isang Halik mo Pancho (1954), and Sa Isang Sulyap mo Tita (1953).
Imagine how many films the Comedy King has done in that 36 year gap (so many to type them all, hehe). Now, Dolphy didnt just do movies, he also appeared in a lot of tv shows including Buhay Artista (ABS-CBN), Tantarangtang (ABS-CBN), John En Marsha (RPN 9, for 17 years, mind you!), Gabi Ni Dolphy (RPN 9), Plaza 1899 (RPN 9), Purungtong (RPN 9), Home Along Da Riles (ABS-CBN 2), Home Along Da Airport (ABS-CBN 2), Quizon Avenue (ABS-CBN 2), John En Shirley (ABS-CBN 2), Maalala Mo Kaya (ABS-CBN 2), and Utoy (ABS-CBN 2).
Now, these are not just so-so programs, so who could beat that?
Dolphy for National Artist!
